An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test follows the set criteria of the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). It is an annual assessment of all vehicles in the UK that are three years old and involves carrying out different vehicle safety checks.

Eligibility Criteria

If you want to get registered for our MOT testing course to become an MOT tester, you must fulfil the following eligibility criteria:

  • Possess a current and full UK driving license for that specific class of vehicle you want to test.
  • Have no unspent convictions for a criminal offence.
  • Be a skilful mechanic with a minimum of four years of full-time job experience offering services and repairs for the type of vehicles you will test.
  • Have a good reputation.

If you want to be an MOT tester of class 3 or 5, you should have:

  • Level 2 testing certificate for class 4 and 7 vehicles (Group B)
  • Passed MOT demonstration test on receiving your level 2 certificate

Qualifications and Accreditations

If you want to become an MOT tester for class 3, 4, 5, or 7 vehicles, you should have any of the accepted qualifications or accreditations, such as:

  • NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications), SVQs (Scottish Vocational Qualifications), or VQRs (Vocationally-Related Qualifications)

These qualifications should be in:

  • Vehicle Mechanical and Electronic Systems, Maintenance and Repair (light or heavy vehicle), level 3
  • Vehicle Technician, Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (light or heavy vehicle), level 3

It would help if you had city and guilds qualification in the following:

  • Automotive Qualification, NVQ Level 3
  • Light or Heavy Vehicle Mechanics Craft Studies (full Part 2 or 3)
  • Motor Vehicle Craft Studies, 381 (full Part 2 or 3)
  • Motor Vehicle Craft Studies, modular – Part 3 (needs 3 modules)
  • Motor Vehicle Craft Studies, Pre 381 syllabus (full Part 2)
  • Motor Vehicle Technician’s Certificate (full Part 1)
  • Repair and Servicing of Road Vehicles, 383 (full Level 2 or 3)

You are eligible to take an MOT testing course if you have any of these qualifications:

  • BTEC (Business and Technology Education Council), National Certificate or ONC (Ordinary National Certificate) in Motor Vehicle Engineering studies
  • IMI Level 3 National Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (Light or Heavy Vehicle)
  • National Craft Certification with a specialism in Vehicle Maintenance and Electronic Systems
  • Scottish Vocational Educational Council National Certificate in Vehicle Mechanics and Systems (Part 3)

You should have an ATA accreditation ID card received after the completion of your qualification, and you should have an ATA (Automotive Technician Accreditation) in the following to take this course:

  • ABC Awards Accreditation in Vehicle Technician Accredited Assessment
  • Light Vehicle Diagnostic Technician
  • Light Vehicle Inspection Technician

Mot Demonstration Test (Class 1, 2, 4, and 7)

On receiving your level 2 MOT testing certificate, it is compulsory to pass an MOT demonstration test. The demonstration test can be given at our training centre after your course completion or at an MOT testing station where you work. Make sure to bring the enlisted things while taking your test:

  • Vehicle (almost three years old)
  • UK driving license
  • Photo ID/License (in case you do not possess a photocard license)
  • Level 2 MOT testing award certificate
  • Basic DBS certificate

A DVSA examiner takes the test, and you will be carrying out a demonstration, recording the results in the MOT testing service’s practice version, and answering the questions related to MOT.

MOT Testing Award

Upon completing your course, you receive a Level 2 MOT testing award in either Group A (class 1 and 2 vehicles) or Group B (class 4 and 7 vehicles). You also receive a certificate required for booking and taking a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency MOT Demonstration Test.

Course Duration

Our MOT testing course covers both theory and practical training, and the duration varies for both groups as follows:

  • Group A (class 1 and 2 vehicles) – 16 hours with approximately 4 hours of practical training
  • Group B (class 4 and 7 vehicles) – 29 hours with approximately 8 hours of practical training
